Step 1: Decide your route and direction
Most travellers do the Christchurch loop: Christchurch → Tekapo → Mount Cook → Wanaka → Queenstown → Te Anau/Milford → West Coast → Kaikōura → Christchurch. You can also do one-way (e.g. Christchurch to Queenstown) if you fly in and out of different cities. Pick a direction and stick to it to avoid backtracking.
Step 2: Choose your trip length

Step 3: Book vehicle and key accommodation
Book your rental vehicle early, especially for peak season. Reserve accommodation in popular spots (Queenstown, Tekapo, Mount Cook Village) well ahead. DOC and holiday park camps can often be booked online.
Step 4: Plan fuel and rest stops
On some legs (e.g. West Coast, Milford Road) fuel stops are spread out. Plan where you’ll refuel and take breaks. Never push through fatigue, pull over and rest.
Step 5: Check conditions before you go
Check NZTA for road closures and roadworks. In winter, check alpine passes and carry chains if required. Weather can change quickly; have a flexible mindset.

- Booking 3–6 months ahead for peak season (Dec–Jan) is wise for vehicles and popular accommodation. Shoulder season can be planned a few weeks to a few months ahead.
- Can I do the South Island in 5 days?
- Five days is very tight for the full loop. You’d need to skip some regions or focus on one area (e.g. Queenstown and Milford only). Seven days is a more realistic minimum.
- What is the best order for a South Island road trip?
- Christchurch → Tekapo → Mount Cook → Wanaka → Queenstown → Te Anau/Milford → West Coast → Kaikōura → Christchurch is the classic order. You can reverse it; both work.
- Do I need a 4WD for a South Island road trip?
- No. The main tourist route is sealed. Some side trips and DOC access roads are gravel; a compact 4WD or a standard car is fine for public roads. Off-road driving is not permitted on rental vehicles.
