Speed limits are signposted. Open road is often 100 km/h; urban areas 50 km/h or as signed. School zones and roadworks may have lower limits. Always obey the signs. Speeding fines apply.
Drink-driving limits are strict. If you’re driving, the safest option is zero alcohol. Check current legal limits on official government or NZTA sources, they can change.
Seatbelts are compulsory for all occupants. Children must use an appropriate restraint. Rental companies can provide child seats; book in advance.
Give way to the right at uncontrolled intersections. At roundabouts, give way to traffic already on the roundabout (from your right). One-lane bridges have give-way signs, obey them.
NZTA and the New Zealand government publish the full road code and rules. Check their websites for the latest. This guide is a summary only; rules can change.
Road conditions
Check NZTA for current road conditions and closures before long drives—especially in winter or after heavy rain.
Visitor tip
Allow extra time for rest and photo stops. Drive to conditions and never push through fatigue—pull over and rest.
