Canterbury and the east coast can be dry and warm in summer; the West Coast is wetter. Central Otago (Queenstown, Wanaka) has hot summers and cold winters. Alpine areas see snow in winter. Coastal areas can be windy. Always check a multi-day forecast before long drives.
Layers work best: base layer, fleece or mid-layer, and a waterproof jacket. Even in summer, alpine and coastal areas can be cool. Sunscreen and a hat. UV is high in New Zealand. In winter, warm layers and a good jacket; chains if you’re crossing passes.
Have a backup plan if a key activity is weather-dependent (e.g. Milford Sound, glacier walks). Road conditions can change; check NZTA. Compact vehicles with good visibility help in rain and wind.
Road conditions
Check NZTA for current road conditions and closures before long drives—especially in winter or after heavy rain.
Visitor tip
Allow extra time for rest and photo stops. Drive to conditions and never push through fatigue—pull over and rest.
