Winter in the South Island brings snow and ice to alpine passes and shorter days. This guide covers chains, black ice, and how to stay safe when driving in winter.
On some alpine routes, chains may be required when conditions are icy or snowy. Signs will indicate when chains must be fitted. Rental companies in winter often provide chains for affected areas; check when you book. Fit chains before you need them, don’t wait until you’re stuck.
Black ice can form in shaded areas, on bridges and in early morning. If the road looks wet but the rest is dry, slow down, it may be ice. Drive smoothly; avoid sudden braking or steering.
Lindis Pass, Crown Range, Arthur’s Pass and others can be affected by snow. Check NZTA before you go. Conditions can change quickly. Have a backup route or delay travel if needed.
Winter days are short. Plan to finish driving before dark where possible. Allow extra time for slower speeds and stops.
Check NZTA and weather forecasts before setting out. If conditions are bad, delay or choose a different route. Drive to conditions, no guide can replace checking on the day.
Road conditions
Check NZTA for current road conditions and closures before long drives—especially in winter or after heavy rain.
Visitor tip
Allow extra time for rest and photo stops. Drive to conditions and never push through fatigue—pull over and rest.
